Two from UP Manila win the Dr. Jose Rizal Memorial awards for 2012. DR. JOSEPHINE R. BUNDOC (left in photo) receives the Community Leadership award for her outstanding work with people with disability in the Philippines. Dr. Bundoc is a Consultant of the PGH Dept. of Rehabilitation Medicine. The other, DR. EVA MARIA CUTIONGCO-DE LA PAZ (right), receives the Research award for her scholarly research works and clinical practice in the field of Genetics. She is the Director of the NIH Institute of Human Genetics. In the middle are the other awardees: Dr. Ma Lourdes K. Otayza, chief of the Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center, Batac City, Ilocos Norte (Government Service); Dr Fortunato "Khryss" L Cristobal, Dean of the School of Medicine, Ateneo de Zamboanga University (Academe). The JRM 2012 awards were conferred by the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) during its 105th Annual Convention and Scientific Meeting held at the EDSA Shangri-la Hotel on 18 May 2012, Mandaluyong City. The eight finalists were screened by 15 judges coming from various sectors of society. This public recognition is given to the most outstanding physicians of the PMA.

The Memorandum of Understanding pertains to both universities' interest in furthering common objectives in research and education, especially in the fields of infectious diseases, tropical medicine, neglected tropical diseases, virus discovery. The MOU will be in effect for 2 years.

Graduates of the Short Course on Restorative and Esthetic Dentistry. For almost a year now, the UPM College of Dentistry (UPMCD) has been conducting the first and only university-based course on restorative and esthetic dentistry. As of 9 May 2012 when the last batch of graduates were recognized, a total of 180 dental practitioners from nine dental schools in the Philippines had completed the course. Of late, restorative and esthetic dentistry is becoming an increasingly interesting area in the field of clinical dentistry. UPMCD continues to take the lead in equipping dentists with knowledge and skills on dental esthetics through this course.

Around 350 participants (students, teachers) attended this national confab organized by De La Salle University, University of Sto. Tomas, and UP Manila (with the latter as host). Kabataan Partylist Representative Raymond “Mong” Palatino, the keynote speaker, told the participants "to popularize the theoretical tools you are using in the academe so that other social institutions like the media can be effective agents of enlightenment and not disinformation... The academe must not insulate itself from the real world; it must aim to change the world.”

Newborn screening experts and top officials of Asia-Pacific countries pose with top officials of UP Manila and Newborn Screening Reference Center after a lovely dinner at the EDSA Shangri-La on Feb. 25, 2012. NSRC was the host of the dinner as well as of the two-day workshop which ended the following day. The workshop, the third held among AsPac countries, discussed advances and consolidated efforts on newborn screening as well as identified problems and strategies in attaining each country's respective goals. The Philippines is the lead country in helping developing nations push forward newborn screening in the Asia Pacific region. This 3rd workshop, held at the Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria, was participated in by the following countries: Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and Mongolia.

Dr. Sumana Barua (Bangladesh), an alumnus of the UP School of Health Sciences in Palo, Leyte, was appointed as Team Leader of the World Health Organization’s Global Leprosy Programme last 20 December 2011. Prior to his promotion, Dr. Barua was Regional Advisor and Regional Focal Person for the Leprosy Elimination Program of the WHO South-East Asia Region, with headquarters in New Delhi, India. Dr Barua has a PhD in International Health Policy and Planning from the University of Tokyo. Before becoming a Doctor in Medicine from the University of the Philippines in 1989, Dr Barua obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Community Health from the same University. In 1999 he gained a Masters in Public Health from the University of Tokyo.

Chancellor Manuel Agulto leads the “Pinning Ceremony” with Global Call to Action 2012 Chair and former PGH Cancer Institute Chair Dr. Cecilia Llave before the symposium that served as prelude to the nation’s observance of World Cancer Day on 4 February 2012. At the said symposium, leaders of government entities, the academe, nongovernmental organizations, civic societies, civic industries, and health organizations, support groups, health workers, cancer patients, the private sector and media converged to share experiences and best practices, create opportunities for networking and partnership, and affirm that fighting cancer is a global and multi-sectoral priority.

PHILIPPINE GENOME CENTER launched! The Philippine Genome Center (PGC) was launched last Nov. 28, 2011, at Makati Shangr-La Hotel. It was established by the University of the Philippines to lead genome research in the country. The Center will focus on Health; Agriculture; Biodiversity for drug discovery and bio-energy; Forensics and Ethnicity; and, Ethical, Legal, and Social Issues associated with genomics research. To support genomic research within the University and in other academic/ government/ private industries, the Center will establish core facilities for DNA Sequencing, Bioinformatics, and Biobanking. The Executive Director of the PGC is Dr. Carmencita Padilla. The website is www.pgc.up.edu.ph. (In the picture, UP President Alfredo Pascual receives a glass plaque from DOST Secretary Mario Montejo to mark the symbolic launch of the Center, while Dr. Padilla talked of its immediate directions.)

Launched last Nov. 28, 2011, at Rizal Ballroom A, Makati Shangr-La Hotel, the Philippine Genome Center (PGC) was established by the University of the Philippines to lead genome research in the country. The Center will focus on Health; Agriculture; Biodiversity for drug discovery and bio-energy; Forensics and Ethnicity; and, Ethical, Legal, and Social Issues associated with genomics research. To support genomic research within the University and in other academic/government/private industries, the Center will establish core facilities for DNA Sequencing, Bioinformatics, and Biobanking. The Executive Director of the PGC is Dr. Carmencita Padilla. The website is www.pgc.up.edu.ph.

After the excellent performance of UPCM and SHS-Palo in the physicians' board exam, the University is proud to announce that both the UP College Nursing and the UP School of Health Sciences-Leyte earned high marks in the July 2011 Nurse Licensure Examination.
Eight graduates from the UP College of Medicine made it to the Top Ten of the August 2011 Physician (Complete, Finals and Finals with Prelims) Licensure Examination given by the Board of Medicine this August 2011.
